The Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Tradition affirms that St. Dominic, the founder of the Order of Preachers, was
inspired to preach the Rosary devotion to the people, as a powerful weapon in
the spiritual war against the Albigensian heresy. This blessed formula of
prayer unites to the repetition of the Angelic Salutation and the Lord's Prayer,
a devout consideration of the principal events in the Life of Our Lord and His
Blessed Mother.
"Whatever
you ask through
the Rosary shall be granted."
Promise of Our Lady to St. Dominic
Innumerable benefits have
been conferred on mankind through the Rosary. The hope of the Christian
world in its war against communism finds its confirmation in the rapid
development of the Rosary Crusade the beginnings of which can be seen in Mary's
apparition to Bernadette at Lourdes in 1858. In 1883 the great Pope Leo
XIII issued the first of twelve encyclicals which were devoted exclusively to
explaining and recommending the Rosary. According to him, the Rosary is
"one of the most beautiful manifestations of the spirit of prayer,"
"the cue to the order of faith and the perfect beauty of the devotion due
to Mary," "a résumé of the Gospel," "the surest way to
interest Mary in the unity of the Church," in brief "a most excellent
manner of praying." He desired to see the Rosary in the hands of
every Catholic.

Prayers
of the Holy Rosary
|
|
In
the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
|
|
Prayer
Before the Rosary
Queen
of the Holy Rosary, you have deigned to come to Fatima to reveal to the
three shepherd children the treasures of grace hidden in the Rosary.
Inspire my heart with a sincere love of this devotion, in order that by
meditating on the Mysteries of our Redemption which are recalled in it, I
may be enriched with its fruits and obtain peace for the world, the
conversion of sinners and of Russia, and the favor which I ask of you in
this Rosary. (Here mention your request.) I ask it for
the greater glory of God, for your own honor, and for the good of souls,
especially for my own. Amen.
|
|
I
believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in
Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again
from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of
God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living
and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the
body, and life everlasting. Amen
|
|
Our
Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name: Thy kingdom come: Thy
will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread: and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass
against us. And lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
|
|
Hail
Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen
|
|
Glory
be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in
the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
|
|
"O
my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead
all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Your Mercy".
(Our
Lady at Fatima, 13th July 1917)
|
|
Hail,
holy Queen, Mother of Mercy! our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To
thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our
sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley, of tears. Turn, then, most
gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus; O clement, O loving, O
sweet Virgin Mary.
|
|
Prayer
After the Rosary
O
God, whose only-begotten Son, by His life, death and resurrection, has
purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech Thee,
that, meditating on these mysteries of the Most Holy rosary of the Blessed
Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they
promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
May
the divine assistance remain always with us. Amen.
And
may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in
peace. Amen.

A
plenary indulgences is granted, if the Rosary is recited in a church or
public oratory or in a family group, a religious Community or pious
Association: a partial indulgence is granted in other circumstances.
The
gaining of the plenary indulgence is regulated by the following norms:
-
The
recitation of a third part only of the Rosary suffices; but the five
decades must be recited continuously.
-
The
vocal recitation must be accompanied by pious meditation on the
mysteries.
-
In
public recitation the mysteries must be announced in the manner
customary in the place; for private recitation, however, it suffices
if the recitation is accompanied by meditation on the mysteries.

Rosary
Novenas
|
|
Religious
devotion, public or private, for the duration of nine days to gain
special graces, is call a Novena. Those who perform it with a lively
hope of having their request granted, and with perfect resignation
should it be refused, may be assured that Christ will grant some grace
or blessing, though in His infinite wisdom and mercy He may refuse the
particular favor which they implore.
Novenas
originated in imitation of the Apostles who were gathered together in
prayer for nine days from the time of Our Lord’s Ascension to
Pentecost Sunday. However, care must be taken lest the power of any
Novena be limited to the number nine rather than perseverance in fervent
prayer.
The
practice of saying the Rosary nine times in the form of a Rosary Novena
in petition or thanksgiving is another way of heeding Our Lady of
Fatima’s admonition to Pray the Rosary.
The
54 Day Novena Devotion which originated in 1884 at the Sanctuary of Our
Lady of the Rosary of Pompei, consists of the daily recitation of five
decades of the Rosary for twenty-seven days in petition and five decades
for twenty-seven additional days in thanksgiving. In reality you will be
making three Novenas in petition for a particular favor and three
Novenas in thanksgiving for a particular favor.
1st
day say 5 Joyful Mysteries.
2nd
day say the 5 Sorrowful Mysteries.
3rd
day say the 5 Glorious Mysteries.
4
day begin again the 5 Joyful Mysteries, etc.

The
First Five Saturdays
|
|
Mary’s
Great Promise at Fatima
The
Five First Saturdays are intended to honor and to make reparation to
the Immaculate Heart of Mary for all the blasphemies and ingratitude
of men.
This
devotion and the wonderful promises connected with it were revealed
by the Blessed Virgin at Fatima, Portugal with these words recorded
by Lucy, one of the three children to whom Our
Lady appeared in 1917. Lucy tells us that she said: “I
promise to help at the hour of death, with the graces needed for
salvation, whoever on the First Saturday of five consecutive months
shall:
1.
Confess and receive Communion;
2.
Recite five decades of the Rosary;
3.
And keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the
fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making
reparation to me”
Note:
Confession during the week, preceding the first Friday, will suffice
for the first Saturday, or conversely when Saturday is the first day
of the month. The Rosary may be recited at any convenient time
of the day, and the fifteen-minute meditation may be made at any
time during the day on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary. A
sermon for the occasion may be substituted for the meditation.
The
Memorare
An
indulgence of 3 years. A plenary indulgence under certain
conditions, if said daily for a month.
Remember,
O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who
fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your
intercession, was left unaided. Relying on this confidence, I
fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother. To you I come,
before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word
Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and
answer me. Amen.
Prayer
to the
immaculate conception
O
Holy Mary, Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, Queen of Heaven and
Mistress of the World, you never forsake or despise anyone; look
upon us with an eye of pity, and beg of your beloved Son the pardon
of all our sins; that we who now devoutly celebrate your Immaculate
Conception may receive the reward of eternal joy through the mercy
of Jesus Christ, our Lord, Whom you, pure Virgin, did bring into the
world, and Who, with the Father and the Holy Spirit in perfect
Trinity, lives and reigns, one God, world without end. Amen.
